October Athlete Feature….
Congratulations to Michael Fischer. Our October featured athlete. This is one I’ve been waiting to do for a while. Michael is a really interesting guy with a really great story and I always look forward to shooting the s*** with him. Not only is he hilarious he does not take himself too seriously and is always positive. He may have been shafted out of AOM at that “other place” but at BOTB we recognize what a gem he is. …..but seriously……if you don’t know Fischer you should. He is a genuinely great guy and a lot of fun to be around. If you’re not sure who he is let’s just say neither Will Farrell or the drummer from The Red Hot Chili Peppers has a membership so if you thought you saw one of them leaving a class that was actually Fischer……..
What brought you to CrossFit and what keeps you coming back?
I was introduced to CrossFit by a friend in 2011. When I first walked into the box I felt completely out of place. Rarely did I work out with weights and couldn’t do a pull-up to save my life. The coach insisted I use the PVC pipe for the first week because my form was so bad.
The only reason I kept coming back was the amazing community. Everyone was so kind and encouraging. Even learning basic movements with my 1 pound PVC pipe, students would say “we have all been there. Just have fun and learn the movements.” Most of the students I pegged as ego maniacs with attitudes were the most helpful and encouraging. With the CrossFit culture, it was easy to get comfortable, ask questions, and learn.
LIFE OUTSIDE THE GYM
There is nothing more rewarding than coming home from the Children’s Hospital where I volunteer to my lovely wife and 2 adorable kids Walker and Texas Ranger. TR for short.
Let’s go with strict press.
What is the movement that when you see it on the board you want to leave the gym?
Its’s a tossup between box jumps, rope climbs, thrusters, handstand pushups, and Curtis P’s. If I had to choose one of these movements for a 60-minute AMRAP with a gun to my head? Pull the trigger…
What is your favorite indulgent food/meal?
Chloe’s corner at Kierland. Grilled cheese, tomato soup, vanilla shake
What is your favorite motivational quote?
“You never really lose until you quit trying” – Mike Ditka
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
If you could be an animal what animal would you be and why?
I probably have the same answer that most people have. The Ivory Billed Woodpecker. I would explain why but I think everyone knows.
How has CrossFit impacted your life and helped you live “Life Unbroken”?”
CrossFit actually came into my life when I needed it most. I craved something to light a fire under me and get out of a dark place. It was hard to get motivated. Not just for a workouts but for work and life. There is nothing better than being surrounded by positive people. Nothing more inspiring than being around others who raise the bar. Students get excited when others get a PR or hit a goal then they do about their own accomplishments.
Like I said earlier, I felt very awkward when I first started CrossFit. I was completely out of my comfort zone. I didn’t know the movements, how to set up equipment, or anyone in class. Now it’s one of my favorite places to be. Where I feel the most comfortable. Even my happy place.
When my mother unexpectedly passed away 3 years ago, it was hard to even get off the floor. On those impossible days and weeks following, it was the classes and people that partially helped get me through. Nothing better than a friend making you laugh, throwing up a high-five, or just get your mind off life for an hour.
Going to the 7am class during the week is something I look forward to. My work schedule revolves around those morning classes. If I skip a few days, everything just feels off. It’s the best way to start my day!!
Even though I will be never make the leader board, haven’t had a PR recently, and still can’t do double under. There is no doubt I am having so much fun and staying healthy. That is why I keep coming back. “Show up, don’t quit.”
